Approach to Church from the A29 and the Village

As you approach this ancient church from the West, you see what appears, at first sight, to be a Norman tower (but see later).

The flagstones at the churchyard gate are all that remains of a footpath which ran Westwards to what is now the A29.

To the right of the gate you will notice an old and most unusual mounting block (to make it easier to get on your horse !). It is somewhat unusual because of its height and size. Its base measures nearly 6 feet long and is over 3 feet wide and the top step is over 3 feet high. It is brick built with flagstones on each step and on the platform.

As you pass through the gate and walk towards the porch the ornamental bricks, perhaps two hundred years old or more, flank the flagstone path.
